Your Questions, Answered
-
Yes. If you are a descendent of the families in the cemetery or interested in reserving lots for yourself or your own family, we strongly urge you to reserve your lots as soon as possible. Even if earlier generations of your family has reserved blocks of graves, we suggest making contact to verify locations and current status. As time goes by, our ever-growing families quickly take up spaces set aside by earlier generations and it’s important that we review status and make additional arrangements for your family if needed. This can be done by visiting our Services page and filling out a simple, secure form.

Maintenance and all other expenses of the cemetery or funded solely through voluntary tax-deductible donations.
It costs about $50 per grave each year to maintain the cemetery. Annual donations in this range go a long way towards securing the future of this historic property and reducing our need for additional fundraising.

Yes. In order to preserve the beauty and serenity of this sacred space, the following rules have been adopted and are enforced:
FLOWERS. Flowers may only be placed/attached on headstones or from “Shepherd Hook” plant holders installed directly against either side of the monument so that they do not interfere with mowing.
SHRUBBERY. No live plants of any kind may be planted in the cemetery.
REMOVAL OF DECORATIONS. The cemetery reserves the right to remove and dispose of all decorations that have become unsightly or create hazards for mowing and maintenance. All decorations will be removed 2-3 weeks prior to Decoration Day each year.
OTHER DECORATIONS. No decorations in any form are allowed that display divisive or offensive themes or interfere with cemetery upkeep. No benches, fencing, curb stones, or other objects blocking the primary “lanes” between rows or creating hazards for mowing are allowed.

Yes. In order to honor our commitment to the spaces you have reserved and ensure the cemetery is in ideal condition for services, all burials and graveside services must be approved by the cemetery prior to digging graves, interring ashes, erecting tents, or confirming dates and times for services. Simply fill out the secure form on our Services page, and we will be honored to assist you in any way we can.

Our bylaws require prior review and approval for all stones and monuments to be installed in the cemetery. Please visit our Services page to access a simple and secure form you can use to send us details on your proposed headstone or other monument. We will be happy to flag the proper line and location for your installation.

Soils in our area are prone to compressing and sinking over time and it is not unusual to see low areas develop in the cemetery. Gravesite maintenance and the cleaning and repair of monuments are the responsibility of the each family. We are happy to direct you towards excess dirt on the site that can be used to level gravesites. Most local monument companies can assist with repairing or realigning and straightening stones as needed.

It is much easier to cause long term damage to monuments than most people realize. Household cleaners, pressure washers, and excessive scrubbing can easily strip the stone and start the process of degrading it. Even relatively nontoxic substances such as flour and shaving cream—once used to make it easier to read older engravings—can react with materials in the stone and environment around it and lead to damage. We recommend following guidelines developed by the State of Tennessee’s Historic Cemetery Program and the U.S. National Park Service when cleaning monuments. Both of these organizations recommend using the non-toxic cleaner D2 when cleaning stones. This product is readily available online and provides excellent protection for your family’s monuments.

We are a rural cemetery and home to a wide variety of wildlife and occasionally, stray livestock. If you have any immediate concerns for safety, please do not confront or approach the threat, and call the appropriate authorities before notifying us by phone or email. For all other concerns, please email us directly and include date/time along with photos and any other details you can provide. The cemetery has cameras installed and our volunteers make frequent patrols of the property, but we greatly appreciate the public’s help in protecting and preserving this historic place.
